Mac DeMarco joins Tall Juan on “Talking to Myself” │ Exclaim!

Tall Juan from NYC will soon release his new album Raccoon Nights on September 6th after releasing the first single “Dark Hole” last month. Today he’s back with another sample from the album, which features none other than Mac DeMarco.

“Talking to Myself” definitely sounds like the kind of song DeMarco would jump on; it’s a breezy, old-school outing about the power of a comforting phone call during a difficult time.

“In those moments when you can barely get out of bed and need the support of friends, it’s easy to get caught up in your own thoughts and convince yourself that no one wants to hear about your problems,” Tall Juan explained in a statement about the collaboration.

He continued:

This mindset can make it increasingly difficult to seek help or find someone to talk to. Sometimes all it takes is a phone call to get out of this situation.

For this song, I needed a friend to sing with me and create a dialogue through the music. I turned to my friend Mac and singing together helped bring the whole concept to life.

In the video, directed by Dana Greenleaf, the couple wanted to “portray the experience of sleep paralysis – the feeling of being immobilized and trapped. We incorporated the idea of various cultural demons associated with sleep paralysis, but we created our own version. As a Butoh fan, I wanted our performance to reflect the expressive, haunting quality of Butoh dance.”

Earlier this year, DeMarco also collaborated with Cassie Ramone and performed at Lil Yachty’s Coachella performance.
