The principal of a high school in California was suspended for “strange” behavior toward the school’s mascot.

On Friday (August 16), a back-to-school rally was held at Buhach Colony High School in Atwater, California, where students, parents, teachers and other staff gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate.

However, a father shared a video of the event on social media showing the school principal engaging in questionable antics.

Ryan Attebery, whose 14-year-old son attends the school, shared a clip of Principal Robert Nunes at the rally on Facebook that day.

In the video, Nunes is seen sitting on an office chair in the middle of the gym. In front of him, someone dressed as Thor, the school’s mascot, is spinning him around in circles, shaking his butt, and the principal is firing a confetti cannon in his hand.

The two then switch places. The principal pushes the mascot onto the chair, bends over her and runs off before finally pushing the chair through a tunnel of students.

Oh, and during all this he also grabs a microphone and screams: “What happens in Buhach, stays in Buhach.”

Attebery’s caption reads: “Am I a square or was that damn weird for a school principal?”

Students have since confirmed that the rally was Las Vegas-themed, but Principal Nunes ultimately had to deal with the Merced Union High School District (MUHSD), which decided to place him on leave.

MUHSD district spokeswoman Viviana Fuentes said in a statement quoted by People: “This decision is part of our commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment.

“The district is conducting a comprehensive review of the situation. While the investigation is ongoing, Mr. Nunes will not participate in any school-related tasks or activities.”

Attebery told People that many students support Nunes and that “everyone says he’s a (good guy)” and that it’s “probably just a bad joke.”

However, he added, “They said, ‘Oh, the students, it was the students’ idea.’ And I said, ‘I know, but the fact that there was no warning flag is a warning flag in itself.’ I’d rather make sure these kids were cool. Still, it was all weird.”

MUHSD Executive Director Torrin Johnson and Buhach Colony Assistant Principal David Rogers are expected to step in as principals for the duration of the investigation.

UNILAD has contacted Buhach Colony High School for comment.
