Presidents Cup: A quick look at the US team and the international team

Welcome to the daily ritual of Playing Through – Golf Talk Today.

Each day the crew discusses various elements of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

Since we watched the Solheim Cup yesterday, I wanted to discuss the rankings in the Presidents Cup today.

Instead of just looking at Team USA, I will also include the international team.

The Presidents Cup will take place from September 24 to 29 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada.

Jim Furyk is captain of the US team, while Mike Weir leads the international team.

Team USA has an overall record of 12-1-1 in the biennial event.

Let’s take a look at the rankings of each team since the competition is about a month away!

Top 6 in the Presidents Cup rankings of Team USA

The top six PGA Tour members with the most FedEx Cup points will automatically qualify for Team USA by August 25. Then, on September 3, Furyk will receive six captain’s picks to complete the team.

1. Scottie Scheffler:
2. Xander Schauffele:
3. Collin Morikawa:
4. Wyndham Clark:
5. Patrick Cantlay:
6. Sahith Theegala:

The first six include:

7. Tony Finau:
8.Russell Henley,
9. Max Homa:
10. Brian Harman:
11.Sam Burns:
12. Akshay Bhatia:

It’s safe to assume that Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele have secured their spots on the team. In addition, it will be interesting to see how the BMW Championship plays out to see the final qualifying rankings. The guys on the outside need a solid week, possibly a win, and that could change the entire President’s Cup standings.

Furyk’s captain selection is still uncertain, however. He could slide straight down the rankings and finish 7-12, but players outside of that top 12, like Billy Horschel, are currently playing better than Max Homa. Eric Cole and Denny McCarthy are two other names to keep an eye on, as they have played well this season.

Davis Thompson could be an unlikely addition to this team if Furyk wanted to spice things up, but that’s probably unlikely.

Top 6 in the International Team Presidents Cup ranking

The international team also has six automatic qualifiers and six captain’s selections. However, FedEx Cup points are not used here, but rather other requirements. The points system of the official World Golf Ranking is the main source for determining the team.

Following the BMW Championship, the International team will announce its six qualifiers on August 25. Weir will also announce his six captain’s picks on September 3. To qualify automatically, golfers must compete in 15 or more OWGR-rated events from September 22, 2022 to August 25, 2024 to be eligible.

1. Hideki Matsuyama
2. Tom Kim
3. Sungjae Im
4. Jason Day
5. Adam Scott
6. Byeong-Hun An

The first six include:

7. Corey Conners
8. Min Woo Lee
9. Cam Davis
10. Christiaan Bezuidenhout
11. Nick Taylor
12. Adam Hadwin

Weir will have a tough task as numbers 7 to 12 are full of talented players who could be great additions. However, Taylor Pendrith, Si Woo Kim and Mackenzie Hughes are the first three players outside the top 12 and could also be of use to the team.

Will Wier go with his fellow Canadians or will he pursue a special strategy for his madness?

There will be nine players deserving of six spots, so it will be interesting to see who Weir chooses to try and dethrone this ruthless American team.
