Former TBI director dies at age 61

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (WMC) – Former Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn has died.

The 61-year-old died of apparent natural causes in his Nashville home, TBI said.

Gwyn graduated from Middle Tennessee State University and began his career as a police officer in McMinnville in 1985.

Three years later, he joined TBI’s Criminal Investigation Division as a special agent.

Three years later, he became a special agent in the Criminal Investigation Division of the TBI.

Eight years later, he was promoted to Executive Officer and subsequently held the position of Deputy Director of the Forensic Services Division.

Mark Gwyn was the first African American appointed TBI Director by Governor Phil Bredesen in June 2004.

He remained in this position until his retirement in 2018.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Director Gwyn,” said TBI Director David Rausch. “Mark had a profound impact on the bureau, contributing to its growth and innovation and cementing our reputation as a leader in law enforcement. We will honor his contributions, remember his legacy and celebrate his life in the days and weeks ahead.”
