Marshfield police are asking for the public’s help in locating a Level 3 sex offender who allegedly approached a juvenile while jogging on Tuesday.

At around 5:45 p.m., police received a call about a suspicious man driving in the Humarock neighborhood, Marshfield police said in a statement.

The man, later identified as Edmund David Chance Jr., offered the girl a ride in his car and, after she declined, followed her until she ran away, the statement said.

After Chance was found in his vehicle following the incident, Marshfield police later determined he had failed to register as he moved, which police say is required by law for Level 3 sex offenders. Scituate police have issued a warrant for his arrest for that violation.

According to the state sex offender registry, Chance was convicted of rape in 1991 and again in 2001.

Authorities said he was last seen driving a black Lincoln Zephyr with Massachusetts license plate 4NWY15. He lived at 23 Hawthorne St. on the Scituate side of Humarock.

Police are asking that if Chance or his vehicle is seen, please contact authorities immediately.

“We would also like to thank the brave young woman who contacted us to report this,” the department wrote.
