Halifax calls for removal of barriers in Dartmouth Cove

The Halifax Regional Municipality is demanding that a company remove barriers it allegedly erected on the Harbour Trail in Dartmouth on Wednesday.

According to a letter from a council attorney, the company that “illegally placed” the barriers at the end of Old Ferry Road must remove them by noon Friday. If they do not do so by the deadline, the council will remove them at the company’s expense.

“My client did not authorize the construction of these structures and their presence on the property constitutes an unauthorized encroachment,” the letter states.

On Wednesday, Atlantic Road Construction and Paving (ARCP) CFO Bruce Wood confirmed to CTV News Atlantic that the company had erected a temporary safety fence along the trail in anticipation of work on the property for seven to 14 days.

Woods did not provide any further details about the nature of the work on the property.

ARCP planned to start a fill project in Dartmouth Cove, which was heavily criticized by the public and politicians. Earlier this year, Transport Canada began steps to revoke ARCP’s permit to dump 100,000 cubic meters of pyrite shale in the bay.

CTV News Atlantic has reached out to the municipality for further comment.
