Raygun condemns backlash and harassment at Olympics: It is ‘devastating’

Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, better known as Raygun, is speaking out against the harassment she has faced since going viral during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her unconventional dance moves while competing against Logan Edra of the USA, Dominika Banevič of Lithuania and Sya Dembélé of France attracted worldwide attention and led to accusations that Raygun rigged Australia’s Olympic selection process.

“I first want to thank all the people who have supported me,” Raygun said in a video message on her Instagram page. “I really appreciate the positivity and I’m glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. That’s what I hoped. I didn’t realize that it would also open the door to so much hate, which was honestly pretty devastating.”

“When I went out there, I had fun. I took it very seriously,” she continued. “I worked my ass off preparing for the Olympics. I really gave it my all. I’m honored to have been part of the Australian Olympic team and to have been part of the breakdancer’s Olympic debut.”

Raygun referred those who accused her of tampering with the Olympic selection process to the Australian Olympic Committee, which has already publicly denied those allegations. She added that she is currently taking a “pre-planned break” in Europe after the Olympics.

“I would really like to ask the press to please stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian breakdancing community and the wider street dance community,” she added. “Everyone has been through a lot because of this. I ask that you please respect their privacy.”

Raygun, who was also parodied by Rachel Dratch on “The Tonight Show” this week, told reporters (via ESPN) after her Olympic routine went viral that “all of my moves are original.”

“Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and show my artistic ability,” she continued at the time. “Sometimes it appeals to the judges, sometimes it doesn’t. I do my thing and it represents art. That’s what it’s about.”
