Austria’s right wants to stop payments to EU military funds to support Ukraine

“We stand for an active peace and neutrality policy – payments to the EU Peace Fund must be stopped. Austria should use the money for its own army,” says the FPÖ manifesto.

It is also said that Vienna’s “anti-neutrality” towards the war in Ukraine is harming Austria more than Russia, and that the ongoing war is an additional burden and driving up energy prices.

A separate program point mentions the need to continue to use Russian gas. While the FPÖ demands that Austria should reduce its dependence on other countries for energy and promote the use of renewable energy sources, the far-right party also believes that renewable energy sources cannot cover all of Austria’s needs.

“Russian gas will continue to make an important contribution to our security of supply. The irresponsible sanctions, which represent counterproductive market interventions, have led to gas prices being many times higher. This has presented not only private households, but also industry, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, with problems that are sometimes insoluble,” the manifesto states.

It is noteworthy that Austria is currently contributing to the European Peace Fund, which supports non-lethal measures.

Elections for the National Council, the lower house of the Austrian parliament, will take place on September 29.

The Austrian extreme right could return to power for the first time since the Ibiza scandal that brought down the coalition between the extreme right and the right-wing party in the country.
