FSSAI extends deadline for removing 100% fruit juice claims from packaging

FSSAI extends deadline for removing 100% fruit juice claims from packaging

The FSSAI had directed that all FBOs should remove the claim “100 percent fruit juice” from the labels and advertisements of reconstituted fruit juices with immediate effect.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has extended the deadline for food business operators (FBOs) to use up pre-printed packaging materials bearing the label ‘100 per cent fruit juice’ on their products to December 31, 2024. This extension was granted after the FSSAI issued an initial directive in June requiring the immediate removal of such claims from advertisements and product labels due to concerns over misleading information.

FSSAI took this decision after consulting with industry stakeholders who demanded more time to comply with the new rules. In a communication to FBOs, the regulator said the deadline for using pre-printed packaging materials has been extended.

Furthermore, the FSSAI stated that products manufactured before the new December 31 deadline can continue to be sold through all channels until the end of their shelf life.

In a directive issued in June, the FSSAI ordered all food business operators to remove claims such as “100 percent fruit juice” from labels and advertisements for reconstituted fruit juices with immediate effect.
