Bakar turns up the funk with the smooth new single “A Girl Like You”

Bakar has a voice that is instantly recognizable. It is smooth and has a natural groove. “Hell N Back” is his biggest song for good reason: it is the perfect combination of corny and upbeat. Bakar’s latest single, “A Girl Like You,” may not have the earworm whistle effect of its predecessor, but it is proof that Bakar has a real talent for funky UK soul. “A Girl Like You” is less than two minutes long, but the groove is so perfectly crafted and the hook is so catchy that the song feels like a complete thought. It all starts with the synth. It’s the first thing we hear, and it gives the film a retro 1980s feel without being overbearing.

Bakar’s lyrics are playful in a Prince-esque way. The British singer doesn’t take himself too seriously on record. However, he doesn’t deliver a line as silly and memorable as, “You made me realize the devil in me. I hope to God I’m speaking metaphorically.” It all blends into something as light and flirty as the song’s title suggests. The real secret weapon of Bakar’s single, however, is the bass. It absolutely steals the show, especially near the chorus, with its bouncy funk leads taking center stage. Bakar has released singles like “React” and the “Everytime” remix throughout 2024. “A Girl Like You,” however, is by far the best of the bunch.

Bakar releases his best single since “Hell N Back”

I’ve never known a girl like you
Now like a song from days gone by
Here you come and knock, knock on my door
Well, I’ve never met a girl like you
