SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) – A new look inside a Home Depot in southwest Miami-Dade reveals what police describe as a gruesome crime involving a 60-year-old man and a 10-year-old girl that landed the man in jail.

Officers arrested Kevin Hurley, a registered sex offender on probation, after he repeatedly made contact with the child inside the store and then followed her on the way to her car.

Investigators say surveillance video from July 4 at Home Depot on the Turnpike near U.S. 1 shows Hurley trying to strike up a conversation with the girl, who was walking with her mother and carrying a Disney souvenir.

According to the report, Hurley was standing in line for returns when he started the conversation. He complimented the girl on her souvenir, saying, “I love your Mickey ears.”

When he finished the transaction, the girl’s mother told officers that Hurley looked at her daughter and said, “I think you’re so beautiful.”

Instead of leaving the store, investigators say, the suspect paced the store, keeping an eye on the child, and attempted to approach the child and the mother at least once more.

The mother noticed his behavior and asked a store employee to accompany her to her car.

According to police, Hurley waited outside in his car until the girl left. He backed up and followed them in his car as they walked through the parking lot.

Not daring to walk to her car, the mother walked to the edge of the parking lot and when she turned around, she saw Hurley standing directly in front of her at a stop sign, staring back.

A Good Samaritan who witnessed the incident approached the man and told him to leave.

Hurley was convicted of child abuse in 2014 and was wearing an ankle bracelet that day.

The police report states that he “is not allowed to have any unsupervised contact with minors, including any contact without the supervising adult’s knowledge of his conviction.”

Although the mother had no way of knowing about Hurley’s criminal record, she knew there was something suspicious about the man following them in his car and making comments about her daughter.

In addition to the surveillance video, investigators said the mother also took a photo of Hurley’s license plate, which helped them track down the suspect.

On July 23, police took Hurley into custody. He is accused of aggravated stalking of minors.

He remains behind bars at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade.
