Will the Cincinnati Bengals sign recently released nose tackle Mike Purcell?
CINCINNATI — The Bengals could use more strength on their defensive line. Rookie McKinnley Jackson is dealing with a knee injury and while he is making progress, it would be nice to have a proven veteran nose tackle on the roster.
For this reason, experienced defensive tackle Mike Purcell could be a very sensible choice for Cincinnati.
The 33-year-old appeared in 16 games last season and started 10 times for the Broncos. He was released by the Patriots on Wednesday after signing with New England on August 1.
Purcell is the oldest player on the Bengals’ roster, but he’s a tough guy. He’s played in at least 13 games over the past three seasons and finished with 103 tackles and five quarterback hits.
Expect Purcell to be a boost to the Bengals defense. He’ll have to be better than Jay Tufele, Domenique Davis and Travis Bell. It might also be good to have another veteran to help Jackson’s development.
Purcell could also give the Bengals some information about their Week 1 opponent, as he has spent the last three weeks at Patriots training camp.
