Californians will soon be able to add their driver’s license to Apple and Google wallets

Governor Gavin Newsom recently announced that California digital IDs will soon be integrated into Apple and Google wallets, part of the DMV’s broader mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program.

Californians will soon be able to show their digital IDs via Apple and Google Wallets at select stores and TSA security checkpoints.

“I sometimes use my Apple Wallet for public transport when I travel. Not often, but I’m getting more and more used to it,” said Cayucos resident Gary Mulholland.

The mobile driver’s license program was launched last year, and to date, more than half a million Californians have added an mDL to their phone using the California DMV’s Wallet app.

“Everything is going digital. I know a lot of my younger friends barely carry a wallet anymore. Everything is on their phones,” Mulholland said.

While Mulholland says he would use it, others are not ready yet.

“I mean, I’m just not an early adopter, so I haven’t been waiting with fervent anticipation for it to happen like some others, I don’t know,” said San Luis Obispo resident Andrew Unetic.

I asked a local wine bar if they accepted digital IDs.

“Honestly, I don’t have a problem with it. We don’t have too many problems with underage drinking here, and it doesn’t necessarily just affect Morro Bay, but the people who come here as well,” said Nancy Herrmann, co-owner of Savory Palette Wine & Tea House.

The governor said the digital ID does not replace the requirement to carry a physical ID, but rather makes it easier to verify age and identity at participating businesses and airports.

However, some people may have safety concerns.

“Every big company seems to get hacked, but for me it’s more convenient. If someone wants to take away my driver’s license, I don’t think it makes much difference,” Mulholland said.

In a statement, DMV Director Steve Gordon said, “We continue to expand the availability and acceptance of digital driver’s licenses and ID cards while ensuring the highest levels of privacy and security.”

The DMV continues to work with financial institutions, retail businesses, law enforcement and local authorities to encourage widespread adoption of mobile driver licenses.
