Police in south Texas are investigating after a missing 8-year-old girl was found dead in a pool tube at a hotel near Houston over the weekend.

A Houston police spokesman confirmed that the girl died on Saturday at the DoubleTree Hotel in the northwest of the city. The hotel is located on US Highway 290, about 22.5 kilometers from downtown Houston.

Officers arrived at the scene around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday after the family reported the child missing.

According to a police press release, homicide investigators reported that the girl had been swimming with her family in the hotel’s lazy river pool before her death.

Later that day, around 11:30 p.m., the girl’s body was found “in a large pipe in the pool area,” according to police.

Local television station KTRK reported that her body was found after a search party reviewed surveillance footage and observed her sinking and not resurfacing.

The outlet reported that the search party drained the water from the pool, ran a camera about 20 feet down one of the pool’s pipes and found the girl’s body there.

Paramedics who arrived at the scene of the accident declared the girl dead, police said.

Drowned girl identified as Aliyah Jaico

The Harris County Institute of Forensic Science identified the girl as Aliyah Jaico.

According to the office, Aliyah’s preliminary cause of death was “drowning and mechanical asphyxia” and her death appeared to be the result of an accident.

Police said officials were awaiting official autopsy results.

Anyone with information about the drowning was asked to contact Houston police.

The case was still under investigation on Monday.
