Maruyama appointed assistant to international team for Presidents Cup

International team captain Mike Weir has appointed Japanese Shigeki Maruyama as the fifth and final assistant to his staff for this year’s Presidents Cup clash against Jim Furyk’s US team, the PGA Tour announced on Wednesday.

Maruyama, a three-time PGA Tour winner who posted a record of 6-2-0 in two Presidents Cup appearances, joins fellow assistants Ernie Els, Trevor Immelman, Geoff Ogilvy and Camilo Villegas.

“I am very pleased to announce Shigeki as my fifth assistant captain for the 2024 Presidents Cup,” Weir said in a press release.

“His record at this event speaks for itself, but more importantly, he is a trusted voice on our team and someone who will inspire these 12 players with his unwavering support and dynamic personality.”

Maruyama, whose last win on the PGA Tour was in 2003, has three top-10 finishes in majors, including his personal best of fourth place at the 2004 U.S. Open.

Maruyama, 54, is one of only six players in Presidents Cup history to achieve a 5-0-0 record in a week (this happened in 1998).

“Representing the international team in the Presidents Cup both as a player in 1998 and 2000 and later as assistant captain in 2013 was one of the most valuable experiences of my golf career,” said Maruyama.

The 2024 edition of the biennial competition, which pits a 12-man U.S. team against a number of international players from outside Europe, will be held September 26-29 at the Royal Montreal Golf Club.

The United States has a record of 12-1-1 in Ryder Cup competition, with its only loss coming in 1998 at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.
