A recent soccer story on AP:

England midfielder Conor Gallagher finally completed his move to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday, ending a weeks-long saga that would have required a move in the opposite direction from Joao Felix to make the deal possible.

Gallagher joined Atletico for £36 million ($47 million) on a five-year contract. Hours later, Chelsea announced the signing of Portuguese striker Felix for £45 million ($59 million).

Chelsea wanted to sell Gallagher, an academy product and vice-captain of the team last season, to help the club meet the Premier League’s financial requirements, which have become more stringent in recent seasons.

Chelsea and Atletico had agreed on his transfer, but last week that contract was in jeopardy, reportedly due to the collapse of a deal that would have involved a move in the opposite direction for Atletico striker Samu Omorodion.

This meant that Gallagher had to return to Chelsea and train alone, but a solution was found with Felix moving from Atletico to Chelsea instead.

Felix spent the second half of the 2022–23 season on loan at Chelsea, having previously become the club’s third most expensive player of all time when Atletico activated the €126 million (around $140 million) release clause in his contract to sign him from Benfica in 2019.

“I’m really excited to be back at Chelsea and can’t wait to get started,” he said. “I’m seeing some familiar faces from my last visit here, which is always nice.”

“I have really enjoyed my time here and have told my friends and family that I would love to return to the Premier League one day. Doing that with Chelsea is a great feeling and I am delighted to be back.”

Felix was loaned to Barcelona last season.

Gallagher played for England at the recent European Championships and was one of Chelsea’s best players last season, making 95 appearances for a club he joined as a six-year-old and scoring a total of 10 goals.

This continues a hectic summer of transfer activity for Chelsea, who continue to rebuild their squad under their American owners.

Ten players were signed for more than $250 million this transfer window. Before that, Chelsea spent $280 million in the summer of 2022, $350 million in January 2023 and more than $400 million in the offseason of the same year.

Felix arrived a week after the arrival of Pedro Neto from Wolverhampton, another player who could fit anywhere in the front three.

Chelsea said on Wednesday that Neto has taken over the No. 7 shirt that previously belonged to Raheem Sterling, a winger who now seems redundant at the club. Sterling was not even on the bench for Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City, Chelsea’s opening game of the Premier League season.

“I’m not saying Raheem isn’t a good player,” said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca. “But I prefer other wingers.”

“I was just trying to be honest. I spoke to Raheem before City. I said he would struggle to get playing time with us.”
