A 22-year-old man with special needs died after his caregiver left him in a hot car for hours Tuesday after sneaking off to drive to his second job in North Carolina, police said.

Rogers Lee Inge Jr., a Universal Health Care employee, was supposed to care for Dontarious Batts, but the janitor instead took him to his other job as a janitor at Cleveland High School in Clayton, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

Inge arrived at the school for his shift at 8 a.m., leaving Batts in his car with the windows closed and the engine off.

The caretaker checked on Batt two hours later and Inge told the police that the 22-year-old was fine.

Inge, 55, went back to work, leaving Batts there for more than six hours. When she returned to the car at 4:17 p.m., Batts was unresponsive, WRAL reported.

He then drove to a local fire station in Clinton with Batts’ body in the car and called 911 on the way. Officers met Inge at the station and pronounced Batts dead.

Inge was taken into custody and charged with manslaughter.

An autopsy is being performed, but investigators believe Batts died due to the heat in the car, according to the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, temperatures in the region reached 81 degrees.

On a day when it’s 27 degrees Celsius, the temperature inside a car can rise to 42 degrees Celsius in just 20 minutes and to 49 degrees Celsius within an hour, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Inge was taken to the Johnston County Jail where he was held on $35,000 bail.

He was fired from his job with Johnston County Public Schools, WRAL reported.
