Fast-growing fire south of Buffalo closes I-90 and forces evacuations

Parts of Johnson County, south of Buffalo, are under a Evacuation order due to a forest fire.

Residents north of I-90 from Tipperary Road to the northern and eastern county lines are urged to evacuate. I-90 is closed between Buffalo and Gillette as the fire crosses the highway and moves from the north-northeast.

There are currently no evacuation orders in place for the residents of Trabing.

A livestock shelter is open at the Bomber Mountain Civic Center in Buffalo. Pets are welcome. Livestock can be taken to the Johnson County Fairgrounds or the Buffalo Sale Barn.

The fast-growing, wind-driven House Draw Fire was discovered this morning. It is burning about 4,000 hectares.

The wind is expected to subside by 6 p.m., which could slow the spread of the fire.

The authorities are asking the population to avoid the area. Due to traffic congestion, rescue services are unable to reach critical points.

Fire engines from Johnson County, the Powder River Fire Department and the Forest Service are also responding, in addition to air support from single-engine firefighting aircraft and a large firefighting aircraft, according to Wyoming Department of Land Management. A very large tanker (VLAT) was ordered.

BLM fire crews are assisting in battling the House Draw Fire southeast of Buffalo, WY. The fire is currently estimated at 4,000 acres. Fire trucks from Johnson County, Powder River Fire Department and Forest Service are also on site, in addition to air support from single-engine firefighting aircraft and a large firefighting aircraft. A very large firefighting aircraft has been ordered. The fire is spreading rapidly and is wind driven – for the safety of firefighters and the public, please avoid the area at this time.
