Viral posts claim Costco’s drinking cups are not suitable for work

The opinion that the cups used to serve drinks from Costco’s vending machine are a bit daring is spreading thanks to viral social media posts.

But you may also think, “Maybe you’re the only one who sees it that way.”

What people are saying about Costco’s Fountain Cups

Most of the allegations started on Reddit when user tommyjv shared a photo of his drink cup from the tap fountain on the Costco subreddit.

The cup has a plastic lid on top with a drinking opening that appears to be opened via a tab. The shape of the opening is… well, that’s what tommyjv thinks:

“Costco just expects me to drink from the shit on my lid?”

The post quickly generated hundreds of comments. Then various media outlets pounced on the story.

“The tab on the cup lid actually looks very similar to a male body part,” Delish wrote in its report on the Costco beverage fountain lid controversy.

Why Costco’s beverage dispenser lids look like this

There is, of course, a perfectly good explanation for why the opening in the lid of a beverage cup resembles a nose. (Wait, we’re talking about a nose, right?)

The somewhat controversial appearance of the cup lid was the result of user error, according to some comments on the original Reddit post.

“I see people struggling with these lids all the time. It’s hilarious,” commented one Redditor. “Their upper lip pushes the flap in. They just sip and the flap keeps the ice cream in.”

In the comments, others compared the lid design to a children’s sippy cup. However, some found the strawless cup a bit complicated.

“I really hate these lids. They spill like crazy when you walk and every time you go over a bump or a wave, the water runs all over the car,” says one comment. “You can’t use a straw because that makes the spillage even worse.”
