BMW recall affects over 720,000 vehicles: View affected models

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for over 720,000 BMW vehicles due to a water pump malfunction that could cause a fire.

BMW is recalling 720,796 of its vehicles from 2012 to 2018. The recalled vehicles include the BMW X1, X3, X4 and X5. In the NHTSA report published on August 19, the luxury car manufacturer stated: “An improperly sealed electrical connection on the water pump can be exposed to water and cause a short circuit.” An electrical short circuit increases the risk of fire, the NHTSA report said.

To correct the problem, BMW dealers will inspect and replace the water pump and connector if necessary and install a protective shield at no charge. Recall notices are expected to be sent out on October 4. Owners can contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417.

BMW recalls more than 100,000 cars due to overheated engine

Earlier this month, BMW recalled over 105,588 crossover and sedan models due to increased fire risk, according to the NHTSA report.

According to the report, published on August 7, problems with the starter motor can cause the car to fail to start, electrical overload, and overheating, which can set other engine components on fire.

Some of the affected vehicles may experience starting problems due to a defect in the starter motor. Repeated starting attempts may cause the engine to overheat due to electrical overload, allowing flammable materials to enter the engine compartment and increasing the risk of fire.

BMW dealers will update vehicle software free of charge. Recall notices are expected to be delivered by September 23. Owners can contact BMW Customer Service at 1-800-525-7417.
