How did New Jersey fare?

Party conference or dance party.

Why not both?

Welcome to politics in 2024.

At the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night, the normally boring ceremonial roll call of states and territories turned into an atmospheric celebration, featuring DJs and state-themed music as delegations cast their votes for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz as the party’s presidential candidates.

Harris and Walz had already finalized the nomination during a virtual meeting on August 6, but the ceremonial roll call gave the Chicago crowd a chance to build their excitement in front of the cameras.

The highlight of the voting may have been Georgia, where Georgia native Lil Jon delivered the Peach State’s 123 votes to the tune of “Turn Down for What.”

New Jersey on the DNC list

New Jersey’s votes were cast by Governor Phil Murphy, who opened his speech with the words: “We’re from New Jersey, baby! And you’re not!”

He was joined by transgender doctor and candidate for Cumberland County Commissioner Joeigh Perella, who mentioned the LGBTQ community, and state Democratic Chairman Leroy Jones, who mentioned national legend Whitney Houston.

As background music, they played – who else? – Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the USA.” The 1984 anthem is often used by politicians, although its lyrics about social hardship are more ironic than blindly patriotic.

The Democratic Party convention lasts until Thursday evening. The Republicans held their convention last month, when they nominated Donald Trump and JD Vance as candidates.
