Scottish teenager dies after falling from balcony of holiday hotel in Ibiza

A Scottish teenager has died while on holiday in Ibiza after reportedly falling from a hotel balcony.

19-year-old Emma Ramsay is said to have died on Tuesday morning after the accident in the hotel in the San Antonio district of the Mediterranean island.

Tributes to Ms Ramsay, who was from Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, described her as “incredibly kind”, “caring and considerate”.

The Strathclyde University student had posted videos of herself enjoying her holiday just hours before her death, saying in an Instagram post that she was “obsessed with this place”.

Lorna Lawson, headteacher of Ms Ramsay’s former school St John Ogilvie High, said they were “shocked and saddened by the heartbreaking news”.

She said: “Emma was an incredibly kind, hard-working, smart and talented student who contributed a lot to our school community.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Emma’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. Emma will be missed and she will forever hold a special place in our school.”

Mrs Ramsay had been head girl and was about to start her third year of law studies at Strathclyde University.

A university spokesman said: “Emma was a much loved member of our student community and we are shocked and saddened by her death.

“Everyone at the university extends our deepest condolences to Emma’s family and everyone affected by this terrible incident.”

Colette Watson, headmistress of St. Mark’s Primary in Hamilton, also paid tribute to her former student.

She said: “Emma was a lovely, caring and considerate girl and many of our staff have really fond memories of her time with us.

“This is terribly sad news and our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences go out to Emma’s family and friends.”

The olive press An Ibiza newspaper reported that ambulances, local police and the Spanish Guardia Civil were called to the Vibra District hotel, but paramedics were unable to save the teenager’s life.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who died in Spain and are in contact with local authorities.”
