Boulder-like 3D-printed houses will have up to three floors

Most 3D printed homes currently only have one storey, which can obviously be somewhat limiting, but an upcoming project in the Netherlands shows that this may not be the case for much longer, as new homes are being built there that will be up to three storeys, illustrating the increasing complexity of 3D printed architecture.

Back in 2021, we reported on the Netherlands’ first 3D-printed house, which was modelled on a boulder. The same team is behind these new houses, which are being built under the name Project Milestone, and they are again designed as habitable boulders adapted to their forest surroundings in Boschuil, Eindhoven.

It’s worth noting that we’ve seen 3D printed houses with more than one storey before, although they’re unusual. One example consisted of a concrete shell with a wooden frame on top, while the other was a two-storey house prototype built for research purposes.

Using a 3D printer, a cement-like mixture is extruded from a nozzle in layers to build the different sections of the house.

In total, the Milestone project will have four houses, divided into two models. The first will have three floors and a total living area of 127 m², while the second will have two floors and 114 m². All will have three bedrooms and are designed for families of up to four people.

The homes will be printed in sections at a nearby factory. To create the sections, a 3D printer will extrude a cement-like mixture from a nozzle in layers to build up the basic shapes, which will then be transported to the site and assembled by human construction workers. Humans will also be tasked with completing the interiors, doors, roof and anything else required.

The 3D-printed homes are for sale and cost between 570,000 and 655,000 euros (about 630,000 to 730,000 US dollars). Construction is scheduled to begin in early 2025, with completion planned for mid-2025.
