Theft figures in Alexandria up 23% so far this year

Theft figures in Alexandria up 23% so far this year

Alexandria has seen a nearly 13% increase in Category 1 crimes so far this year, with thefts increasing 23%.

Category 1 crimes, or crimes against persons, include murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft and auto theft. According to the Alexandria Police Department’s Crime Dashboard, there have been a total of 2,692 Category I cases this year, a 13.5% increase from the 2,371 total cases reported up to this time last year.

Murder and theft are the only statistics in Part 1 that have increased so far this year. There have been five murders so far in 2024, compared to four in 2023. There have been 2,129 thefts so far this year, compared to 1,733 thefts reported in 2023.

Alexandria has experienced a rise in crime in recent years, with a dramatic increase in firearms incidents, and the department has struggled with diversity and morale issues.

A map of urban crime (in the gallery above) shows that the highest concentration of crime occurred in Alexandria’s West End, Arlandria, and the Braddock neighborhood.
