RG Kar Hospital tragedy: MeitY directs social media sites to remove content identifying deceased from RG Kar Hospital

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Wednesday asked social media platforms operating in India to remove all references to the name of the deceased in the RG Kar Medical College incident, following a recent Supreme Court order on August 20.

“We direct that all references to the name of the deceased in the above incident, photographs and video clips be immediately removed from all social media platforms and electronic media in accordance with this order,” MeitY said in a statement.

In addition, the panel called on all social media companies to ensure that such sensitive information is not shared further.

“Failure to comply with the Supreme Court order may result in legal consequences and further administrative action,” the ministry added.

In addition, all social media platforms were instructed to inform the Ministry of the action taken in response to compliance with the Supreme Court ruling.

The Supreme Court had said it was “compelled to issue an interim order” because social and electronic media had published the identity of the deceased and photographs of the body after the body was recovered.
