Warning to pet owners after cats die from suspected poisoning | UK news

Two cats from the same family died in Scotland, presumably from antifreeze poisoning.

Following two fatal incidents on High Street in Methil, Fife, this month, pet owners have been warned to be vigilant.

The animal welfare organisation Scottish SPCA has raised the alarm after a cat was taken to the vet on Saturday whose blood showed signs of poisoning.

The charity said the cat had not responded to treatment and had to be put down to prevent further suffering.

This happened just nine days after the cat’s sister was taken to the vet with symptoms of poisoning and also had to be put down.

Robyn Gray, inspector of the Scottish SPCA, said: “The family is devastated by the death of their beloved pets and fears for the other Cats in the area.”

Use of poison or other dangerous objects with the intention of causing harm Animals is a criminal offense and can be prosecuted.

Inspector Gray said: “Most people are unaware of the danger of antifreeze poisoning for pets. Ingesting even the smallest amounts can lead to kidney failure and death, particularly in cats.”

“These cats exhibited symptoms such as lack of coordination, vomiting, dilated pupils, dehydration, lethargy and seizures. Most veterinarians associate these symptoms with poisoning.

“If your pet shows signs of possible poisoning, take him or her to the veterinarian immediately.”
