The New York Giants had to reshuffle their tight end corps this offseason after veteran Darren Waller retired. The Giants then brought in rookie Theo Johnson to join the group alongside third-year TE Daniel Bellinger. The duo has potential, but perhaps Big Blue could use a little more depth at the position.

One of the G-Men’s rivals recently released a veteran tight end who could be an interesting target for the backup. The Philadelphia Eagles released CJ Uzomah on Wednesday morning, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rappoport, creating a solid free-agent deal in a thin market.

Could the Giants sign CJ Uzomah as an additional tight end?

Uzomah is a nine-year NFL veteran who has played with various teams over the past few years. After spending the first seven seasons of his career as the centerpiece of the Cincinnati Bengals’ offense, Uzomah signed with the New York Jets in 2022. He spent two seasons with Gang Green and had minimal impact as a backup tight end on their roster.

In the offseason, Uzomah spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles. He appeared in a preseason game for them and caught just one pass for three yards. The Eagles released Uzomah on Wednesday as they prepare to trim their roster to 53 men ahead of the regular season.

Uzomah is no longer a starting-level talent in the NFL. His best season came in 2021, when he totaled 493 yards and five touchdowns for the Bengals. At this stage of his career, Uzomah is a backup, but that could give him advantages as a blocker, which could make him an interesting addition to the Giants.

Behind Johnson and Bellinger, the Giants have a group of lackluster relievers like Jack Stoll, Lawrence Cager and Chris Manhertz. Uzomah could be an interesting veteran to add to the mix.

However, the Giants will ultimately want to rely on their younger talent and the potential of Johnson and Bellinger. The development of those two will be more important than signing more tight ends behind them. While the Giants made a roster move earlier this week to free up salary cap space, the newfound money will likely be used to bolster the defense rather than bring in a new backup tight end.
