Breathtaking drone images show remains of a border town in the ADKS

Many of us in the Capital Region have fond childhood memories of visits to our great Adirondack Mountains. Some remember the early years of Storytown (now known as Great Escape), others loved Water Slide World, while others enjoyed the horses, carriages and stagecoach bandits at Frontier Town.

Frontier Town in Schroon Lake, NY was founded in 1952 by a man named Arthur Bensen. Bensen designed it as a theme park for children and a large playground for adults. For over 40 years, Frontier Town was a tourist destination in the Adirondack Mountains with its equestrian stuntmen, wild broncos, horse-drawn carriages and stagecoach bandits.

While other attractions in the Lake George area grew in popularity, Frontier Town closed in 1998 due to declining crowds and stood empty, abandoned and neglected for twenty years.

Eventually, the state of New York bought the land and rebuilt the dilapidated amusement park.

The location was reopened in autumn 2018.

The former frontier town is now a New York state park where guests can camp, hike, ride horses, bike, and picnic. Certain trails are closed to guests, but many are open year-round.

Some of the original Frontier Town signs can still be seen on the property. The entrance to Frontier Town now serves as a luxury rest area with food, souvenirs and restrooms. The area can be rented for parties.

Most people have never seen the Adirondacks like this, and thanks to Adirondack Drone we were allowed to share these strangely beautiful photos high above Frontier Town.
