Camels strengthen coaching staff with two players

BUIES CREEK – Head Coach Kevin McGeehan has added two members to its coaching staff for this season. Brett Carey joins as assistant coach and Luchiano Gomez-Joseph as director of player development.

Carey comes to Buies Creek after one season at Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders finished 14-19 and he helped four players earn All-Conference honors. Carey has also coached at Austin Peay, Indiana State, UNC Asheville, South Carolina and Oak Hill Academy in his nearly 20-year coaching career.

Carey, a graduate of UNC Asheville, was a two-time coach of the Bulldogs from 1999-2001, starting each season in the backcourt. The longest coaching stint of his career was a nine-year stint at his alma mater, where he helped the program to two Big South titles in 2011-12. He later became the program’s associate head coach, where he helped the team to two consecutive 20-win seasons and another NCAA Tournament appearance.

The Lincolnton, North Carolina native also played for the Asheville Altitude (NBDL) before spending a professional season in Norway following his college career.

“I have known Brett for many years and have a lot of respect for him as a basketball coach and a person,” said Coach McGeehan. “I remember always thinking how difficult it was to prepare for his UNCA teams when he was there. He has coached in a number of excellent programs and worked with some really good people. Brett has a wealth of knowledge in all aspects of the game and will be a tremendous asset to our coaching staff.”

Gomez-Joseph joins Campbell as Director of Player Development after serving as an NBA skills coach in Miami. During his time in South Florida, he worked with Brandon Knight, Rodney Hood, Gary Trent Jr., Alex Len, Terrrence Davis, Chris Silva and others. He also helped coordinate film sessions with NBA skills coach Stanley Remy.

The Ocala, Florida native is a two-time USF graduate (’21, ’23) and served as a team manager during college and then as a GA while pursuing his Master of Science in global sustainability.

“We are very excited to have Lucci join our team,” said McGeehan. “He will excel in his role in player development. He brings tremendous energy and passion to our group. He builds a real connection with the players and they quickly gravitate toward him and want to learn from him. Lucci brings a positive attitude to everyone he meets, which is refreshing.”
