Kolkata rape and murder case: Social media platforms must delete posts about the victim’s identity

The Ministry of Electronics and IT has asked social media platforms to remove posts related to the doctor-student who was allegedly raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The ministry also asked the platforms to submit a report on the measures they took after the shutdown.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday also ordered that the victim’s name, photographs and videos be removed from all social media platforms. The order, passed by a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, stressed that disclosing the identity of sexual assault victims violates an earlier Supreme Court judgment in the Nipun Saxena case.

Meanwhile, the Kolkata police, which is under fire over the incident, has summoned several prominent people, including TMC MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and former BJP MP Locket Chatterjee, as well as renowned doctors Kunal Sarkar and Subarna Goswami, on charges of spreading false information and revealing the identity of the victim.

Earlier on the same day, Roy had urged the CBI to act fairly and demanded that the former head of the medical facility and the CP be questioned in custody to find out “who circulated the suicide story and why”.

Calcutta police have summoned 57 other people for allegedly spreading rumours and revealing the doctor’s identity.

The doctor’s body was found on August 9 and a volunteer was arrested the following day in connection with the crime. The Calcutta High Court on August 13 ordered the transfer of the investigation from the Calcutta Police to the CBI, which began its investigation on August 14.
