Only one golfer can displace Scottie Scheffler from the top spot in the FedEx Cup standings.

Xander Schauffele would have to have a perfect week at the BMW Championship to even have a chance of taking over Scheffler’s top spot.

The winner of the BMW Championship receives 2,000 FedEx Cup points. Schauffele is the only golfer who is within 2,500 points of Scheffler.

While the math at the top is simple, the calculations around 30th place, the cut-off for the Tour Championship, are done through the 72nd hole at Castle Pines Golf Club.

1. Scottie Scheffler – 6,532 points

2. Xander Schauffele – 5,037

3. Hideki Matsuyama – 3,898

4. Collin Morikawa – 2,596

8. Sahith Theegala – 2,076

9. Patrick Cantlay – 2,017

To secure first place in the FedEx Cup standings before the Tour Championship, Scheffler must finish at least fourth.

First place is important because that golfer will start next week at 10 under par. After that, there is a staggered starting point system with golfers starting at even par on places 26 through 30.

Scheffler could only lose the top spot if Schauffele wins the BMW Championship and Scheffler finishes fourth or worse on equal points.

The scenarios for the rest of the FedEx Cup standings will be determined by several outcomes.

50 golfers will participate in the BMW Championship, but 20 will not make it to the Tour Championship.

For Tommy Fleetwood and everyone else ranked 31st to 50th, a win is the easiest way to secure a spot in the Tour Championship, which is worth 2,000 FedEx Cup points.

Even a high finish in Colorado could take a player from outside the bubble into the top 30. Nick Dunlap went from outside the top 50 to the top 50 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, finishing in a tie for fifth place.

All golfers outside the bubble must achieve a minimum qualification to have a chance of qualifying for the Tour Championship.

For example, Fleetwood, who is ranked 31st, needs to reach at least a tie to reach 48th. PGATour.com has listed all the minimum finishes required for players outside the top 30.

Fleetwood, Max Homa, Will Zalatoris, Adam Scott and Corey Conners are among the notable names outside the top 30 competing in the BMW Championship.

There will also be a lot of movement within the top 30, as less than 1,000 points separate Collin Morikawa in fourth place from Matthieu Pavon in 20th place.

Scheffler, Schauffele and St. Jude Championship winner Hideki Matsuyama are the only golfers who are well ahead in the standings heading into the second round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
