Solheim Cup: A quick look at Team USA’s ranking before the last Major

Welcome to the daily ritual of Playing Through – Golf Talk Today.

Each day the crew discusses various elements of the PGA Tour, LPGA, LIV Golf and more.

Today we look at the Team USA Solheim Cup scores for the Solheim Cup, which takes place September 13-15 at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainsville, Virginia.

This week the ladies are at the AIG Women’s Open, the LPGA’s last major tournament, and it’s the perfect time to see where everyone stands.

Last time we looked at the leaderboard, Nelly Korda and Lilia Vu were the only ones to have secured their spot, but now five ladies have made it. Ally Ewing, Allisen Corpuz and Lauren Coughlin join Korda and Vu on Team USA.

Coughlin won her second LPGA event this year at the ISPS Handa Women’s Scottish Open in Ayrshire, Scotland. She also finished third at the Chevron Championship and fourth at the Amundi Evian Championship.

It has been a great year for the 31-year-old as she is currently one of the hottest players on tour.

Let’s take a look at the current team lineup and who is behind them in the rankings.

TEAM USA

— Nelly Korda
— Lilia Vu
— Lauren Coughlin
— Ally Ewing
— Allisen Corpuz

Table Solheim Cup Team USA:

6. Megan Khang
7. Andrea Lee
8. Rose Zhang
9. Alison Lee
10. Sarah Schmelzel
11. Jennifer Kupcho
12. Angel Yin
13. Cheyenne Knight
14. Lexi Thompson
15. Marina Alex

The top seven players on the Solheim Cup points list qualify automatically, and the top two players in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings who have not already qualified will be selected.

Stacy Lewis will also select three captains.

Rose Zhang and Alison Lee are the two best female players in the world golf rankings.

Currently, Megan Khang and Andrea Lee are ranked 6th and 7th on the points list. This week at the AIG Women’s Open will be great because Zhang and Alison Lee are not that many points behind.

Not to mention, Lexi Thompson, who sits at No. 14, is pretty tempting. She’ll need to perform well this week and score some extra points, but it would be hard to believe Lewis would leave her off this team.

Coughlin and Corpuz were the last to secure a spot before the qualifying period ended on August 25. Lewis will announce the full Team USA roster on August 27.

The final major of the year will be notable as the ladies on the outside fringe will try to impress Lewis enough to land one of those picks.

Who do you think will round out the Solheim Cup for Team USA?
