Before the 2024 Leagues Cup began, Los Angeles FC was on the shortlist of expected Major League Soccer tournament contenders.

No one expected the Colorado Rapids to advance to the semifinals. Colorado entered the 47-team Leagues Cup as the 46th seed. To get to this point, the Rapids eliminated the tournament’s top seed and North America’s most successful soccer team – Club America. Club America’s surprise elimination also meant that no Liga MX club would advance to the Leagues Cup semifinals.

The reward for the Rapids? A visit to Los Angeles, where their opponents have just signed France’s all-time leading goalscorer, Olivier Giroud, to their team.

The Rapids defeated four Liga MX opponents in a row during their impressive Leagues Cup run. After defeating 2023 Concacaf Champions League winners Club León on penalties in their final group match, the Rapids defeated Juárez, Toluca and Club America in the knockout rounds.

LAFC have won their three knockout round matches by an aggregate score of 9-1 and crushed the Seattle Sounders 3-0 in Saturday’s quarterfinals to secure a home semifinal tie. Giroud has played in the previous two matches, but LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo has only used the French football icon as a late-game substitute.

The winner of the semifinal between LAFC and Colorado Rapids will face the winner of the match between Columbus Crew and Philadelphia Union in the final. The losers will play in the third-place match. Both matches are scheduled for Sunday, August 25, with the winner of the match between Columbus and Philadelphia hosting the final. Both finalists, as well as the winner of the third-place match, will qualify for next year’s Concacaf Champions Cup.

What is the Leagues Cup?

North America’s two major professional soccer leagues are pausing their respective regular season competitions for a month to compete in a World Cup-style tournament.

The Leagues Cup was formerly an eight-team tournament, but became a 47-team competition in 2023, involving all clubs from Major League Soccer and Liga MX. Inter Miami CF, led by Lionel Messi, won the first edition of the expanded competition.

Before the first tournament last year featured 47 teams, including all clubs from MLS and Liga MX, the Leagues Cup had already been held twice (2019 and 2021) with a limited number of participants.

The 29 MLS and 18 Liga MX clubs are divided into 15 groups in two regions: East and West. The group stage begins on July 26 and runs through August 6. The top two teams in each group qualify for the knockout round, which begins on August 7. The final will be held on August 25.
