13-year-old dies in car crash after ‘epic day’ at Dollywood with church group

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT/Gray News) – A 13-year-old Tennessee boy will be remembered as a “bright light” after he was killed in a car crash while driving back from Dollywood with his church group.

Police are investigating a crash that killed 13-year-old Aidan Linville as he and his church group returned from a day at Dollywood, WVLT reports. The crash happened Sunday in Crossville, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Aidan traveled to Pigeon Forge with a group from his church in Sparta to visit Dollywood on Saturday. Shortly after the group began their journey home, they were involved in a serious car accident.

In a statement, Aidan’s family said first responders and staff at two hospitals tried to save the 13-year-old, but his injuries were too severe. He died at UT Medical Center.

Family friends say Aidan was so excited to be at Dollywood that he tried every ride in the park and even got blisters on his feet trying to make the most of this “epic day.”

“He just had a lot of fun, enjoyed the trips and being with his friends,” said Tyler Brandes, leader of Boy Scout Troop 128 in Sparta, where Aidan has been a member for the past few years.

Brandes described Aidan as an energetic, wild teenager who was interested in Marvel movies and enjoyed hanging out with his friends.

He added that even at a young age, Aidan was someone who went the extra mile for others, which was evident in the way he interacted with his family.

“His father is a single father. His father has an amputated arm and lost it in an accident at work. That’s why he always helped his father with things,” said Brandes.

Aidan had just started eighth grade at White County Middle School. Family friends say he was very active in his church.

“Aidan was a bright spot in our lives – full of endless energy, kindness and a spirit that touched everyone he met. He loved his family deeply, valued his church community and made lasting friendships through his involvement in the Boy Scouts and at school. His passing has left a void that can never be filled,” the teenager’s family said in a statement after his death.

The family asks for privacy, understanding and prayers in their grief.

“Aidan’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him,” the statement said.

A GoFundMe campaign has been started to help Aidan’s family with medical expenses, funeral arrangements and other costs.

No further information about the crash was released.
