Good and bad news for NASCAR Cup teams ahead of Saturday’s race at Daytona on NBC

The excitement is building as the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs approach.

With two races left in the regular season, here’s a look at where each Cup organization stands ahead of Saturday’s race at Daytona International Speedway (7:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock).

23XI Race — Good news: Tyler Reddick’s win at Michigan put him in the points. This is the first time in the team’s four-year history that a 23XI Racing driver has led the points. … Reddick’s seven career Cup wins have all come at different tracks. … While he has yet to win at Daytona, Reddick did win at Talladega earlier this season. … Reddick has never finished worse than sixth in the last seven races this year. … Bubba Wallace has three career second-place finishes in Cup at Daytona. … Wallace’s five top-five finishes at Daytona are the most at a Cup track in his career. Bad news: Wallace’s car was damaged in Kyle Larson’s crash at Michigan and ended up finishing 26th. … Wallace is the first driver outside of a playoff spot, although he is only one point behind Ross Chastain.

Front Row Motorsports — Good News: Michael McDowell started from the front row in all three slipstream races, took pole position in Talladega and Atlanta, and qualified second for the Daytona 500. … Todd Gilliland led 16 laps in this year’s Daytona 500. It was the first time he led multiple laps in a Cup race at Daytona. Bad news: Gilliland has never finished a Cup race in five starts at Daytona. … In the six Daytona races since winning the 2021 Daytona 500, McDowell has finished 28th or worse four times.

Hendrick Motorsports — Good News: William Byron won this year’s Daytona 500. He is looking to become the first driver since Jimmie Johnson in 2013 to win all of the Daytona races in a season. … Byron is the only one to win the last 10 Cup races at Daytona on repeat. … Alex Bowman has finished at least sixth in the last three Daytona races, including a second-place finish in this year’s Daytona 500. … Chase Elliott has completed all but one of the 6,438 laps this year. That’s 99.98% of the laps. Bad news: Kyle Larson dropped from first to fourth in the points standings after his accident in Michigan. … Larson has not won a race in 20 Daytona Cup starts and has never finished higher than sixth.

Joe Gibbs Racing — Good News: Denny Hamlin is the winningest active driver at Daytona with three victories, all of which came in the Daytona 500. … Hamlin, Christopher Bell, Martin Truex Jr. and Ty Gibbs have led a combined 2,456 of the 6,438 laps driven this year, or 38.1% of the laps. Bad news: Truex finished 24th or worse in eight of the last 12 races this season, including three in a row. … Christopher Bell failed to finish six of 24 races this season.

JTG Daugherty Racing — Good News: Ricky Stenhouse Jr.’s best finish of the season came at Talladega, where he finished fourth. … All three of his Cup wins have come on superspeedways, including the 2023 Daytona 500. … At Daytona, he has led 148 laps, the most of any track. Bad news: Since winning the 2023 Daytona 500, Stenhouse finished 34th there last August and 31st in this year’s Daytona 500.

Kaulig Racing — Good news: Shane van Gisbergen is scheduled to drive the No. 16 this weekend. This will be his fifth Cup start of the season. … Three of Daniel Hemric’s six career top-10 finishes have come in the last 15 races. Bad news: Hemric finished outside the top 20 in the last four races.

Legacy Motor Club – Good News: John Hunter Nemechek has never finished worse than 11th in his three starts at Daytona, including a seventh-place finish in this year’s Daytona 500. … Nemechek’s 9.7 average finish at Daytona is the third-best mark of any driver who has started there at least three times. … Erik Jones finished eighth in the Daytona 500, the only race this year in which two Legacy MC cars finished in the top 10. … Jones’ first career Cup victory came in 2018 at the summer race at Daytona. Bad news: Nemechek finished 28th or worse in each of the last six races this year, and was unable to finish three of those races due to an accident.

Richard Childress Racing — Good News: Kyle Busch won a stage at Michigan, his first stage win of the season. … Busch’s fourth-place finish last weekend was his first top-five finish in the last 13 races. … Austin Hill is back in the No. 33 this weekend. This will be his fourth Cup start of the season. Bad news: In the three Daytona races since his August 2022 win, Austin Dillon has finished no better than 33rd. … Kyle Busch has one Daytona win in 38 career Cup starts at Daytona. That win came in July 2008. Only four drivers from that race still race full-time in NASCAR (Martin Truex Jr., Michael McDowell, Denny Hamlin and AJ Allmendinger).

CAR: April 20, NASCAR Cup Series GEICO 500

The hearing on Richard Childress Racing’s appeal of the penalties at Richmond is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Rick Ware Racing — Good News: The organization has posted its best finish at a given track in six of the last seven races. … Four of the last six races have seen a Rick Ware Racing car finish in the top 20, including Justin Haley’s 20th-place finish at Michigan. … Haley’s lone Cup win came in the 2019 summer race at Daytona. … Cody Ware is 15th for the second week in a row and the fourth time in the last five races. Bad news: Haley has not finished in the top 20 in his last five starts at Daytona.

RFK Racing — Good news: Chris Buescher won at Daytona last August and teammate Brad Keselowski finished second. … Buescher has five top-five finishes and seven top-10s at Daytona, both of which are his best finishes at a Cup track. … Keselowski has eight top-five finishes this season. Last season he had seven. Bad news: Keselowski has failed to finish half of his 30 career Cup starts at Daytona. … Since winning at Daytona in July 2016, Keselowski has failed to finish 11 of the 15 races there.

Spire Motorsports — Good News: Corey LaJoie has a top-10 in each of his last two starts at Daytona. … Spire Motorsports placed two cars in the top 10 at Michigan, the first time this season that Spire has done that. Zane Smith finished seventh. Carson Hocevar finished 10th. Bad news: LaJoie has not finished in the top 10 since his fourth place finish at the Daytona 500.

Stewart-Haas Racing — Good news: Noah Gragson has two top-10 finishes in his last three starts at Daytona, and his best result was third at Talladega. Bad news: It has been two years since the organization’s last win (August 14, 2022 at Richmond by Kevin Harvick). … 92 races have passed since Chase Briscoe’s win at Phoenix in March 2022. … Ryan Preece has crashed out of two of the last four races. … Josh Berry has crashed out of two of the last six races.

Team Penske – Good news: Joey Logano has led at least one lap in 11 consecutive Daytona races. … Logano, Ryan Blaney and Austin Cindric have combined to win 10 races on slipstream tracks (Daytona, Talladega, Atlanta), the most wins by any Cup team in the series. Bad news: Blaney has failed to finish the last two races at Daytona, finishing 30th in this year’s Daytona 500 and 36th last August.

Trackhouse Racing — Good News: Daniel Suarez ranks second in the series in laps completed, having completed all but 13 of the 6,438 laps completed this season. … Ross Chastain remains in a playoff spot despite spinning out in overtime at Michigan and dropping 14 spots from his original position. Bad news: Chastain holds the final playoff spot and is just one point ahead of Bubba Wallace with two races remaining. … Suarez, who won at Atlanta earlier this year, has never finished better than seventh at Daytona in 14 Cup starts.

NASCAR: NASCAR All-Star Race

Ross Chastain holds the last playoff spot, but is only one point ahead of Bubba Wallace.

Wood Brothers Racing — Good News: Harrison Burton achieved his best result of the season with a tenth place finish at Talladega earlier this season. … In Atlanta, he finished eleventh in this drafting race. Bad news: Burton failed to finish three of the last six races this year. … He failed to finish three of his five Daytona Cup starts.
