Corunna has high expectations after reaching the state finals last season

CORUNNA, Michigan (WNEM) – Last year was a season like no other for the Corunna Cavaliers.

Corunna went undefeated in the regular season and made it to its first state championship game.

The Cavs may not be able to keep up, but they are not satisfied with a single trip to Ford Field.

Corunna returns seven starters from last year’s 13-1 team on both sides of the ball, and the Cavaliers plan to control the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

This is the first time Corunna has taken part in the national finals. This year they are aiming for second place.

“We’re still a little mad because a lot of people say, ‘Oh, you lost your star players.’ But we still have a strong group and we just want to prove everyone wrong and show that last year wasn’t a fluke,” said Lucas Kuran, senior wide receiver and cornerback.

“Ford Field had practically all the stands filled. It was great to have the community behind us and we hope we can do that again this year,” said AJ Brieger, senior lineman.

“I think everyone wants to, you know, once you do it once, you’re not happy with it. You want to do it again and again, so these guys are motivated to do their best. We’re going to go on the field and play nine games and see what we can put together and then hopefully we can make the playoffs and see what we can do there again,” said Steve Herrick, head coach.

TV5 will continue to feature at least one high school football team every day until play begins on August 29.
