At 114 metres high, the building, known as the Ard, will be the second tallest building in the city after the Glasgow Science Centre Tower.

Designed by Hawkins Brown, the Ard project will consist of two buildings of 36 and 10 floors respectively and will have 780 student rooms.

Ongoing demolition work at Portcullis House will pave the way for the project, while retaining much of the existing structure.

A spokesman for Watkin Jones said: “We are delighted that our planning application for The Ard has been approved subject to conditions.

“This mixed-use project of high-quality student housing will address the city’s well-known chronic shortage of student accommodation and also release more suitable housing for families.

“In addition to the student accommodation, a new multi-purpose facility for the Glasgow Social Enterprise Network (GSEN) charity and flexible commercial space will be created, as well as increased public space.

“The remediation of an existing brownfield site is carried out according to the highest environmental standards and includes the latest low-CO2 or CO2-free technologies.
