Varsity Voices Cast for Episode 4 – August 20, 2024

On Wednesday, Prime Time Preps and the Tampa St. Pete Sports Connection will air another episode of Varsity Voices, a weekly radio show and podcast streamed on floridasportsstreams.com, radiostpete.com and sportstalkflorida.com that offers listeners in-depth analysis of upcoming games, interviews with players and coaches and reporting that goes beyond the results.

The show will be broadcast from Ferg’s in St. Petersburg and will run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This week’s guest is Armwood football coach Evan Davis.

Davis, a former player at the school, has kept the Hawks in title contention throughout his tenure, leading Armwood to a 51-20 victory over defending state finalist Miami Norland last weekend.

We’ll also talk about the major football games in Hernando, Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties as we open the 2024 regular season on Friday. And we’ll discuss attendance in the sport.

Last week, Lakewood girls basketball coach Necole Tunsil and Rivals national recruiting analyst John Garcia Jr. were guests.

Tunsil is considered one of the best athletes the Tampa Bay Area has ever produced. She was a two-time Parade All-American, led the Spartans to a state championship in girls basketball and won state titles in the high jump and shot put. She made the Final Four as a starter for Iowa, played overseas and in the American Basketball League and was an assistant at Eckerd before returning to coach at her alma mater over a decade ago.

At Lakewood, Tunsil made the girls program a perennial contender for the state title, and she led the Spartans to the state title as coach in 2011. Three months ago, St. Petersburg city officials recognized her accomplishments by presenting her with a key to the city and declaring May 15 Necole Tunsil Day.

Tunsil discussed her career as a player and coach, her decision to return to Lakewood and her rank as an athlete at this star-studded school, among other things.

Garcia, who has made a career as a recruiting analyst, discussed the impact of NIL on recruiting, former Tampa Catholic coach Jeris McIntyre’s work in recruiting local recruits as director of high school relations at UCF, and the meteoric rise of regional quarterbacks who are now among the most sought-after recruits.

In addition to Varsity Voices, you can also catch up on the latest developments and celebrate the successes of Tampa Bay’s up-and-coming sports talent with The Tampa St Pete Sports Connection radio show, airing Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. live from Ferg’s Sports Bar and Grill on AM 820. The Big 8, SportstalkFlorida, Floridasportsstreams and Radiostpete.com recap all of the week’s high school highlights.
