Should the Yankees remove Clay Holmes from his closer position?

Last week, we asked Yankees fans what area of the team they were most concerned about. Holes have appeared throughout the summer roster, whether it be at the bottom of the lineup, in the starting lineup, or in the bullpen.

Ultimately, the fan base spoke up and said the bullpen was the most concerning aspect of the current roster, and those concerns remain. Now we’re wondering if Clay Holmes, who just blew his league-leading 10th save over the weekend in Williamsport, should remain the Yankees’ closer.

Holmes has had an excellent start to 2024, not allowing a single earned run in his first 20 appearances, but his claim to the closer’s job now seems fragile after posting a 4.80 ERA over the past three months.

Still, it’s not an obvious move to simply kick Holmes out of the job. He’s had problems with run prevention, but in those same three months, Holmes has posted a strong 2.93 FIP. His sinkers and sliders remain good throws, but his control is a cause for consternation. Plus, the Yankee bullpen lacks obvious candidates to take over. Ian Hamilton, one of the best relievers in baseball last year, is recovering from an injury. Tommy Kahnle has a sparkling ERA but struggles with home runs and walks. The less said about Mark Leiter Jr.’s recent performance, the better.

And then there’s Luke Weaver, who may have been the Yankees’ best reliever this season, but is also a converted reliever with no experience as a closer. So what do you think? Should the Yankees stick with Holmes? Should they move on to Weaver? Or could they go with a different closer entirely or join a committee? Vote in the poll below and have your say in the comments.
