Child dies after being left in hot car outside Corpus Christi middle school

A 22-month-old child died after being left in a car outside a middle school in Corpus Christi on Tuesday.

Officers from the Corpus Christi Police Department and Corpus Christi Fire Department were dispatched to Browne Middle School, 4301 Schanen Blvd., at 1:29 p.m. to search for a toddler found in a vehicle on the property, according to a news release from the Corpus Christi Police Department.

When they arrived, they found a school nurse performing CPR on the child.

The fire department took the child to a local hospital, where the child was later pronounced dead.

Corpus Christi Police detectives arrived at the scene to investigate the incident but did not know how long the toddler had been in the vehicle, the press release said.

In a statement, Corpus Christi ISD thanked school staff, county police and other law enforcement officials who responded to the incident.

The school district asked that all inquiries regarding the ongoing investigation be referred to the police department.

School district officials reminded the public that counseling services would be available on campus Tuesday afternoon and that the district’s crisis counseling team would be on site Wednesday.

“We ask that the privacy of our staff and students be respected as we work to maintain school operations, which can be a relief during a crisis,” the statement said. “We would also like to take this opportunity to ask for kindness and compassion for everyone involved, especially the child’s family.”

Hot, humid weather is also affecting South Texas this August. Early Tuesday morning, the National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for Corpus Christi and Nueces County that would be in effect from noon to 8 p.m., with a heat index of 110 degrees or higher, increasing the risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. An extreme heat advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. for Wednesday, with a heat index forecast to reach 115 degrees.
