Man accused in Clinton Township explosion has tether removed

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (CBS DETROIT) – Noor Kestou, owner of Goo Distributors, is charged with manslaughter after his company caught fire and exploded in March.

As a result of the explosion, gas containers containing nitrous oxide and butane shot through the walls and roof of the building at the corner of 15 Mile Road and Groesbeck.

One of the projectiles hit and killed an innocent passerbyTanner Salter, 19, who was standing a block away on 15 Mile Road.

Kestou was also charged with illegally storing the canisters.

On Tuesday, he attended a pretrial conference in 41B District Court where new information about his case was revealed.

“Okay, normally I wouldn’t agree to that, but without the prosecutor’s objection I will remove the shackles,” said presiding judge Sebastian Lucido.

Kestou was arrested in April at John F. Kennedy International Airport, where he was believed to have purchased a one-way ticket to China. He was ordered to post $500,000 bail and the judge ordered him to wear a shackle.

However, on Tuesday, prosecutor Sian Hengeveld said Kestou’s defence had presented evidence that he had no intention of fleeing the country.

“I would like to state for the record that the information available to me at the time of the indictment only indicated that the accused had a one-way exit ticket. Since the indictment of the accused, I have had information that he had a return ticket. For this reason, I consider it appropriate at this time to remove the shackles,” said Hengeveld.

Lucido then agreed to allow Kestou to untie himself.

The defense filed a motion to postpone the hearing until a later date because a separate investigation into the cause of the fire that led to the explosion was necessary.

“The timing and all the coordination of all the different groups of people who want access to the site: law enforcement, insurance companies and us, and of course the prosecutor’s office will play a role. And then it’s about identifying areas that could be the cause and origin,” said Kestou’s defense attorney James C. Thomas.

Hengeveld agreed to adjourn the pre-trial conference.

“While we are not happy about having to adjourn the case, I certainly understand why it has to happen,” she said.

The pretrial hearing was rescheduled for October 28 in 41B District Court in Clinton Township.
