How to remove a PS5 cover

  • PS5 launch model (CFI-1000): Lay the console on its side. Grab the corner with the PS logo and pull it up and to the left.
  • PS5 Slim (CFI-2000): Lay the console on its side with the front facing you. Remove the feet and then lift the panels straight up and back.

This page will show you step-by-step how to remove the covers from a PlayStation 5 and how to reattach them afterwards. The instructions apply to both the launch and slim versions of the PS5.

Before removing a PS5 cover

Before removing the front panels of your PS5, it is important that you turn off your console completely. To do this, go to the Control Center and select Performance > Turn off PS5. Then remove all cables and stands (if necessary) and wait a few minutes for the console to cool down.

Once this is done, you can remove the covers.

How to remove the cover of the launch PS5

If you bought a PlayStation 5 at launch – or anytime between then and November 2023 – these are your instructions. To confirm, look on the back of the console for the model number, which is CFI-1000.

  1. Place the PS5 on a flat surface with the PS5 logo facing the top right.

  2. Grab the top right corner, lift it up, and slide the entire top panel to the left. This is a bit of a awkward move, so it may take several tries to get it right.

  3. To reinstall the same cover or install a new one, slide it from right to left. You will hear a click when the cover is back in place (you may need to press down a little to make it click into place).

  4. Turn the console over so that the power button (front) is facing you. If your PS5 has a disc drive, it should also be facing you.

  5. Grab the top left corner of the cover, pull it up and slide it to the right.

  6. To reattach, slide the cover from right to left until it clicks into place.

How to remove the covers from a PS5 Slim

Unlike the original model, the covers on the PS5 Slim lift in a different direction. However, the removal process is similar. The model number of the Slim version of the PS5 is CFI-2000.

  1. Place the console on a flat surface with the feet down and the front facing you.

  2. Remove the feet from the PS5.

  3. The PS5 Slim has four different cover plates, each with a symbol that corresponds to the four action buttons on the DualSense controller (X, square, circle, and triangle). You remove them all in the same way.

  4. Grab a cover from the bottom (the side closest to you) and lift it up. The cover should release from the clips and you can gently pull it toward you to remove it completely.

  5. To reattach the cover or install a new one, align the cover clips with the corresponding holes on the front and back of the PS5 and press it in until you hear a “click.”

Why you should remove a PS5 cover

The three main reasons for removing the covers on a PS5 are to clean it, upgrade the hard drive, or replace the boards with a new color.

In the third case, you can purchase new console covers in different colors such as red, pink, black and blue. These plates allow you to quickly and easily refresh the standard white look of the PlayStation 5.
