Providing sailing news for sailors

Barcelona, Spain (August 20, 2024) – During training ahead of the Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta, which begins on August 22, Alinghi Red Bull Racing experienced rigging damage on board “BoatOne”.

“Today there was a rig failure on BoatOne during the early training phase. Everyone on board is safe and the incident will be investigated in due course,” said Silvio Arrivabene, co-general manager of the Swiss team. “In the meantime, the team is fully focused on the race.”

This is the second rig failure suffered by the Swiss team. The breakage occurred on June 13 during training. No other team in the 37th America’s Cup has lost a rig since the introduction of its new AC75.

The team explained that they were sailing against the wind at about 13 knots when the mast suddenly fell. The mast was newly purchased and had only been in use for 20 minutes. Today’s broken mast replaced the previous one, which had only been there for a few hours before collapsing.

According to the team, the failures occurred in a very similar manner and in both cases all load sensors indicated that the stress levels were well within acceptable limits. Investigations are currently underway to determine what happened to the structural integrity of the masts.

The teams are limited to one old mast and two new masts and are believed to have broken their two new masts. The team now intends to use a mast that has been successfully sailed over the past few months and will be installed so that BoatOne is in racing condition and ready to dock by 1pm tomorrow.

The Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta will take place from August 22nd to 25th, the Challenger Selection Series begins on August 29th.
