The Spoetzl brewery is known for producing the popular Texas beer Shiner Bock.

Soon there will be even more reasons to take a day trip to Spoetzl Brewery, home of Texas’ popular Shiner Bock beer.

The 115-year-old brewery in the town of Shiner is adding a cocktail lounge and restaurant to its fast-growing on-campus offerings, officials said Tuesday.

The 799 square meters The venue will feature a fully equipped kitchen, a covered patio, fire pits and an exclusive VIP area. The new space, which can accommodate 300 people, can also be rented for private events.

According to Spoetzl, construction will begin on September 6. The groundbreaking ceremony with free beer and barbecue will be open to the public.

News of the planned expansion follows the announcement in April of the opening of the brewery’s barbecue restaurant, called K. Spoetzl BBQ Co. A distillery opened on the site around the same time.

The Spoetzl Brewery was founded in 1909 by German and Czech immigrants. San Antonio-based beer distributor Gambrinus Co. purchased the facility in 1989 and built it into one of the largest independent craft beer producers in the country.

The brewery and surrounding attractions are located at 603 E. Brewery St. in Shiner, about an hour and a half east of San Antonio.
