Two people die after falling from balcony in North Vancouver: IHIT

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in North Vancouver said homicide detectives are investigating an incident in which a woman and a girl fell from a balcony in the Lower Lonsdale neighbourhood on Tuesday.

At around 4:30 a.m., Mounties responded to reports of the falls at an apartment complex on East Esplanade Avenue.

When officers arrived, they found two women with injuries sustained in the fall. Police have now announced that the victims were an adult and a “school-age child.”

“First responders, including British Columbia Fire and Emergency Services, immediately began life-saving measures. Unfortunately, both women were later pronounced dead,” the RCMP said.

The Mounties say the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has taken over the investigation.

“Police believe the two knew each other and are not currently looking for any other suspects,” said Corp. Esther Tupper of IHIT.

“This tragedy has obviously affected a lot of people. And anyone who would like to speak to RCMP North Vancouver Victim Services can contact us at 604-969-7540,” Const. Mansoor Sahak told 1130 NewsRadio.

Police say anyone with information related to the investigation into the falls can call the IHIT information line at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email [email protected].

This story is constantly evolving. More information to come.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story reported that the victims fell from a ninth-floor balcony. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) of North Vancouver has retracted its statement that included that information.
