Because of my size, I felt like an outsider

Geena Davis “really wanted to be small” and had trouble fitting in because of her size.

The “Thelma and Louise” actress, who began her career as a lingerie model, spoke about the insecurities she felt about her height during her youth, admitting that she felt like an outsider because she was taller than her schoolmates.

She told The New Yorker: “I was tall even as a baby. I was always the tallest kid in the class, male or female, until my senior year. And I found it very exhausting to stand out so much because the last thing I wanted was to stand out.”

“It wasn’t that the kids teased me – I just felt it. I didn’t fit in. But in high school, everyone has their own thing, their own personal torment.”

The 6’0″ former Victoria’s Secret model said she would often go to extreme measures to appear smaller.

She added: “Well, my mother knew from an early age that I was going to be very tall and she urged me from the beginning not to let my shoulders slump.

“Before I even thought about slumping my shoulders, she said, ‘You have to stand up straight.’ And so I found ways to curve my hips outward, which might have made me a little shorter, or to squat down on things. But I really wanted to be short.”

Geena later grew up and attributed her acting career to her height, as it helped her land a role in the 1982 comedy Tootsie.

She said: “I never became famous as a model. My only magazine cover was New Jersey Monthly and you couldn’t see my face – I was wearing a huge hat. But it didn’t matter because when they cast Tootsie, the role I ended up playing required me to be in underwear in some scenes and they thought, well, let’s see if there are any models who can act. And my agents said, ‘Yes, we have one!'”
