Marlin residents frustrated with high water bills despite ongoing water problems

MARLIN, Texas (KXXV) – “We are not forcing them to take responsibility, and responsibility is something we all need to stand up for and hold our city officials accountable,” said longtime Marlin resident Bridgett Burleson.

People in Marlin are speaking out and expressing dissatisfaction with the way the city is handling its recent water problems.

On Monday afternoon, the city notified residents of a water main break at the intersection of Live Oak and Walker Street – just one of many that have occurred in recent months.

The problems resulted in many residents having no access to clean or drinkable water.

“It’s ridiculous how much is happening here in Marlin – stop talking a lot, put the talk aside and we want to see action. We want to see some things improve,” Burleson said.

Bridgett Burleson has lived in Marlin for over 50 years and says she is frustrated with the amount of her recent water bills.

“July – $214.60, August $132.98 – that’s ridiculous,” Burleson said.

“Given the current problems, our bill should not be more than $75 or $80.”

The city of Marlin says the breaker has since been repaired, but neighbors say the water is still undrinkable. Burleson says she’s counting on the rest of the community to bring their concerns to city leaders.

“We talk a lot on social media, but we also need to come to city council meetings and raise our voices and say what’s bothering us – especially our water bill, which doesn’t even give us drinking water,” she said.

“We need better and we deserve better.”

The City of Marlin is currently under a boil water order and Level 3 Drought Emergency Plan until further notice. The City is also working to restore water pressure and refill water towers.
