Police have erected additional security fencing in a Chicago park where protesters clashed with police near the Democratic National Convention venue. A second day of demonstrations was planned for Tuesday, including one outside the Israeli consulate.

The park, which is a block from the convention center, was the target of a march of thousands demanding a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas. Several dozen activists split from the main group, broke through the fence and were pushed back by police, resulting in several arrests.

Police planned to provide an update on the number of arrests on Tuesday morning.

The Chicago chapter of the National Lawyers Guild said 12 people were arrested Monday, two of whom required medical attention. Two people were also arrested for criminal damage and resisting arrest during a protest march Sunday evening.

Authorities said the internal security perimeter around the United Center had not been breached and there was no danger to convention attendees.

On Tuesday morning, additional fencing was erected in the park and high metal barriers were reinforced to prevent protesters from lifting and removing the panels in the future. There were no police or protesters present in the park early Tuesday.

Organizers had hoped that at least 20,000 people would attend Monday’s rally and march, but only a few thousand people appeared to turn out, although city officials declined to provide estimates of the number of participants.

Closer to downtown Chicago, tighter security than usual – including police officers with guns slung across their bodies – was in place outside the office building that houses the Israeli consulate and a major transportation hub for the city. Metal barricades were erected and an official said they were preparing for a 7 p.m. demonstration.

The consulate is about two miles from the United Center and has been the scene of numerous demonstrations since the Gaza war began in October. It is located in a building attached to the Ogilvie Transportation Center, a major commuter rail station.

Most of the large demonstrations were organized by the March on the DNC coalition, which is pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza, but there were also smaller protests across the city, including disruptions at the convention’s welcome party at Navy Pier.
