Trip to 2026 World Cup jeopardized due to US visa delays

As the United States, Canada and Mexico prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, fans from around the world are eager to travel there to witness the action, but this could pose a problem. Obtaining a visa to legally enter the United States is usually a lengthy process. The recent COVID-19 pandemic has made this process even more complicated.

Waiting times for visa appointments extended to two years before the 2026 World Cup

However, the mass influx of travelers who need new visas to enter the United States is currently blocked. A new report from NPR claims that waiting times for issuing visa documents in some areas are longer than the time remaining until the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The waiting time for a date in Bogota, Colombia, is currently 677 days. The tournament in North America is scheduled to begin in just 663 days. In Mexico City, waiting times can be up to 476 days and in Ottawa even 850 days.

However, the situation in these cities is not necessarily the norm. Waiting times for a US visa vary considerably by region. In Rome and Seoul, the wait time is currently less than a week. In cities such as Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Paris and London, appointments should also be available within a few months. In Abu Dhabi and Mumbai, on the other hand, the wait time is currently around a year.

FIFA is working with authorities in the United States to ensure that there are no visa issues for fans who want to attend the World Cup. The world governing body has been working with departments of the US government, including security and administrative officials.

“We recognise the urgency of these matters and their role in delivering a successful event that will attract millions of visitors from around the world,” FIFA said in a statement.

US government could ease concerns with new task force

The issue has raised concerns among members of the US Congress. Representatives from both political camps are calling on the White House to set up a special task force to alleviate concerns. Regardless of the specific waiting time for visas, the authorities are urging everyone who wants to travel to the 2026 World Cup to start the process as soon as possible.

Aside from getting an appointment for a visa, getting the actual paperwork can be difficult. Applying for a visit usually requires an official letter from an employer in the applicant’s home country. Visitors essentially need proof that they have a regular income in their home country. Foreign, self-employed football fans may have difficulty providing these required documents.

The American government will have to reckon with a massive influx of temporary travel to sporting events. In addition to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the USA will also host the 2025 Club World Cup, the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and the 2034 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

If you plan to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup games in the United States and need a visa, now is the time to start preparing.
