BROOKHAVEN — A trio of young gunmen targeted a retired Brookhaven teacher Monday night. Brookhaven Police Chief Kenny Collins said he heard the call over the scanner.

Miriam Moyer, a retired teacher, taught Collins in her home economics class and was described by Collins as “the nicest person.”

Moyer is said to have opened the door to a young girl and two boys on Monday night who had asked for water. She tried to give them water and was splashed with water when she returned. Collins said she could not give a description of what the people were wearing. He did not know if the people used a water hose or a cup during the incident.

He said it was believed that the perpetrators were black. Officers combed the neighborhood but were unable to find the perpetrators.

Anyone with surveillance footage Monday night who may have captured the three people on video is asked to contact Brookhaven Police to forward the evidence.

“It’s a shame when someone takes their kindness and treats them like that, especially when it’s an elderly person,” Collins said.
